It isn’t every day that AMS has the chance to work on a project that is nearly two and half decades in the making. That’s exactly what happened when Tom Caudle of Sweet Union Brewery came to us late last year to fulfill a lifelong dream.
For the past 24 years, AMS has had a working relationship with Tom and his son, Travis, of Piedmont Commercial Roofing, Inc. through various construction projects, but their true passion has always been beer. In 2012, the father-son duo opened Monroe’s Beer & Wine Hobbies in Monroe, North Carolina. The store specialized in homebrewing, and the two spent years honing their craft and helping others do the same.
Just four years later, Tom and Travis, with the help of Tim O’Neill, began their next adventure—Sweet Union Brewing Co. Moving from a homebrewing background to a large scale brewery meant they needed space to create their brews for the masses. Opting for a previously vacant storefront in a strip mall, Sweet Union was able to bring a new, vibrant business to a space that had been empty for years.
Outfitting a preexisting space is not new to AMS, but this project posed its own series of challenges. AMS loves a challenge and Sweet Union Brewing Co. quickly became a labor of love for both the construction team and the Sweet Union crew. The Sweet Union Brewing‘s tasting room was the first brewery project for the team, and even though we know a decent amount about beer, we learned a lot about the brewing process and the equipment it entails.
Installing brewing equipment and glycol cooling systems for the first time, AMS worked closely with the Sweet Union Brewery crew to ensure a safe work environment and a quality product. Through this close working relationship, AMS was able to maneuver around the tight budget using creative design and supplies and materials from previous projects and allowing for Tom and Travis to put their own personal touches on the tasting room.
Sweet Union Brewing Co. held a grand opening for their tasting room on April 29, 2017. Sweet Union has revitalized the space and now holds community events like Yoga at Sweet Union, Boot Camp and Brews, and intimate concerts showcasing local performers. Twenty-four years later, AMS was able to come together with Tom, Travis, and Tim to make their dream of creating a craft beer tasting room a reality—truly a sweet union. Cheers!
